A newsroom that reflects the breadth of the communities it covers produces better journalism. The Chronicle measures and discloses the demographic composition of its staff and contributors, and we set explicit goals for representation and source diversity.
Staff composition#
We publish an annual report disclosing staff composition by gender, race, ethnicity, and geography (newsroom and total). The most recent report is linked from this page; historical reports are archived for comparison.
Source diversity#
Editors track the demographic composition of named sources quarterly. The aim is for our reporting to be informed by a range of voices that reflects the populations affected by what we cover, not the demographic skew of credentialed-expert pools alone.
Hiring and contributor pipelines#
Open positions and contributor opportunities are advertised through general and affinity-group channels. Internships are paid and structured to be financially accessible. Application materials are evaluated against published rubrics.
