Cookie Policy
What this policy covers
This Cookie Policy explains how The Chronicle uses cookies
and similar browser-storage technologies. It is a companion
to our Privacy Policy and uses the same definitions.
What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your
browser. We also use the browser's local storage, which works
similarly but is not strictly a cookie. For brevity, we refer
to both as "cookies" below.
What we use cookies for
The Chronicle uses a deliberately small set of cookies. We
do not use third-party advertising cookies, behavioural
tracking cookies, or social-media re-targeting pixels.
Strictly necessary
| Purpose | Set by | Storage |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping you signed in to your account | Clerk (our auth provider) | First-party cookies tied to the session |
| Bot defence on forms | Cloudflare Turnstile (challenge only — invoked when you submit a form) | Short-lived first-party cookie |
| Cross-site request forgery protection | The Chronicle | First-party cookie |
You cannot turn off strictly necessary cookies without
breaking core site features (sign-in, posting a comment to
moderators, submitting the newsletter form). They contain no
personal data beyond what is needed for the feature.
Preference
| Purpose | Set by | Storage |
|---|---|---|
| Remembering your language choice | The Chronicle | First-party cookie |
| Remembering your reading depth mode (short / full) | The Chronicle | Browser local storage |
| Remembering your dark/light theme | The Chronicle | Browser local storage |
Preference cookies are convenience-only. Disabling them is
safe; you will just be asked to pick the option again on each
visit.
Analytics (when enabled)
When our analytics provider is configured, we collect
aggregated, cookieless page-view counts. The provider does
not set any cookies and does not record any personal
identifier. There is no consent banner to dismiss because
there is nothing tracking you.
If we ever introduce analytics that require consent, we will
present a banner asking for it before any such tracking
loads.
## What we do not use
We do not set:
- advertising cookies;
- third-party social-media tracking pixels;
- cross-site behavioural-tracking cookies;
- "fingerprinting" cookies designed to recognise your device
across sites.
We do not share any cookie information with advertising
networks.
Controlling cookies
You can clear cookies and local storage from your browser's
settings at any time. You can also block cookies in advance
from the same place. Blocking strictly necessary cookies
will prevent you from signing in or completing form
submissions.
Most browsers also offer a "private" or "incognito" mode in
which cookies are discarded when the window closes.
Changes to this policy
When we update this policy, we update the date shown at the
foot of this page. Significant changes will be announced at
the top of the site for thirty days.
