Funding Disclosure
Independent journalism requires transparent funding. Below is a complete account of where our revenue comes from, in descending order of share, and the principles that govern any constraints we accept on it.
Revenue sources#
Reader subscriptions are our largest source of revenue. Direct sponsorships from named partners are second. Foundation grants for specific reporting projects are third; each grant and the projects it funded are listed below by year.
Editorial firewall#
No advertiser, sponsor, donor, or grantor has prior review of editorial content, influence over story selection, or input into how their industries or interests are covered. Funders are disclosed in any article touching on their work or sector.
Corporate structure#
The Chronicle is operated by an independently held company. No single shareholder holds a controlling stake. The board includes seats reserved for editorial leadership and reader representatives.
