Ethics Policy
The Chronicle is built on the principle that journalism is a public trust. The standards below govern how our reporters and editors do their work, and they apply to every article published under our masthead.
Independence#
Editorial decisions are made independently of advertisers, commercial partners, political affiliations, and the personal interests of staff. Conflicts of interest must be disclosed to a senior editor before assignment; unresolvable conflicts result in reassignment.
Sourcing and verification#
Every claim of fact must be independently verifiable. We name our sources unless safety or genuine professional consequence requires anonymity, in which case the rationale is documented in the article and approved by a senior editor.
Plagiarism and attribution#
Reporting that originates with another publication is attributed in-line, not absorbed silently. Quoting more than a few words from a copyrighted source requires either fair-use grounds or explicit permission. Any failure to attribute discovered after publication is treated as a correction.
Gifts, junkets, and outside work#
Staff do not accept gifts, paid travel, speaking fees, or compensation from sources or subjects of coverage. Outside writing, teaching, and consulting must be disclosed to the editor in chief.
